After watching a documentary called “The Perfect Penis”, I was inspired to research the topic of a man’s fascination with his penis. Today’s society suggests that ‘bigger is better’ when it comes to penis size, and it isn’t difficult for men to find advertisements offering penis enlargement products and procedures. Many opportunists are trying to convince men that their length and girth can be increased using various pills, pumps, weights, and surgeries. They are offering a miracle-solution to a majority of men, who think that their penis is too small. However, this pursuit of penile perfection could be damaging, and may cause disease, dysfunction, or impotence. Dr. Harold Reed from the Reed Society performs on two or three men each week, noticing that “the ability to pay is more of a deciding factor than for medical reasons”. He compares a penis enlargement to a woman’s breast enlargement, and agrees that it’s all about body image. “Men have a curious fantasy that if they have a big penis, they are better than other men”. (The Perfect Penis, documentary, 2004) Many advertisers and scam artists also want men to believe this. However, most women say that it is unimportant, and sexual satisfaction in the bedroom has more to do with attitude and having fun. Having a large penis is not always better for the woman during sex. Most of a woman’s sensitivity is located near the opening of the vagina. However, if your partner seems unsatisfied, discuss creative ways to deliver sexual satisfaction. Understanding your partner’s physical and emotional desires and fantasies is more likely to improve your sexual encounters than increasing your penis size. Most men who think that their penis is too small actually have normal sized penises. Average penis size is between 3-4 inches when flaccid and 5-6 inches when erect. A penis is considered abnormally small if it measures less than 3 inches when erect (called micropenis). In the past, it was suggested to reassign a baby boy with a micropenis as a girl. However, studies have shown that children are born one gender, and they will remain that way despite any rearing or surgery. It has since been proven that a man with a micropenis can father children and have a great sex life. Marketers offer many different ways for men to achieve an enlarged penis with scientific looking endorsements and serious looking advertisements. However their methods rely mostly on false testimonials and skewed data. If you read the fine print, your will probably find, “These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)”. The FDA is the government agency that regulates medical devices and medications. They have not approved any devices or medications for enlarging a penis. Medical organizations including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) have issued policy statements against penis enhancing cosmetic surgical procedures. As of today, all procedures are considered ‘experimental’ and have not been proven safe or effective. Also, be aware of the following methods that claim to enlarge penis size. There are no studies that prove the effectiveness of these methods.
Many men think that having a bigger penis will help them to have a better sex life or make them more attractive. But the reality is that their penis size probably falls within the normal range, and even if it is smaller than normal, it may not matter as much as they thought. Think about other options, such as getting in shape, trimming pubic hairs, communicating with your lover, or talking to a counselor. The ultimate decision is yours. Just remember that non-proven, dangerous penis experiments could leave you broke (at about $10,000 per surgery) and much worse, you could have permanent damage.
