Dating a Single Parent
Dear Shawn and Katia,
Last week I met an amazing single mom living just down the street from my house at a party and we hit it off from the start. Although it's only been a couple dates I can see things getting more serious between us very easily. She likes to talk about her daughter a lot, and I am finding myself worrying that if her ten year old doesn't like me when we meet, then it might be then end of the relationship. Do you have any advice on what I should do with them for a first encounter? How should I act differently while on a date when her daughter is with us?

When you meet her daughter, be yourself. Have fun and smile often, ask the girl questions about herself, and genuinely listen to her answers. Kids can tell a false sincerity in an instant. If you treat her how you'd treat anyone (with respect), it should be fine. What not to do: Get too close or flirt with her mom unless the mom instigates it, swear or be negative, ignore the child, treat her like a baby, or buy her expensive gifts at the beginning (children can see through this).
