How Do I Approach the Beautiful Stranger?
Dear Shawn and Katia,
Realizing that staying home most nights after work wasn’t helping my social life, I’ve been going out a lot more in an effort to get noticed. Vancouver is a city full of beautiful people leading such different and interesting lives. I often find myself wondering who these people are and how I could find out. But my shyness is something that always stops me. What do I say? What I’d like to ask you is how do I approach a complete stranger?

Dear Timid T,
Are you afraid at what a person’s response would be, or are you afraid of no response at all? Think about what the worst thing that could happen if you asked someone, “what are you reading?”
Approach someone with a genuine interest in either what they’re wearing, reading, listening to, drawing, drinking…and then try to be prepared to have something else to say on the subject, such as a short and positive comment (If you can make them laugh it will be better, but not necessary). For example, “what are you drawing?” “It’s a card for my mother”. “I love the way you used such bright colours.”
